DISCIPLESHIP IN THREES (D3)

WHAT IS A D3?

D3 stands for discipleship in threes

Ecclesiastes 4:12 says that ‘a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.’ This verse presents us with the simple idea that following Jesus is more than an individual practice, it is a communal one. We follow Jesus best as we do discipleship together.

Joining a D3 is understanding that we need others around us, and having a heart to grow as disciples of Jesus together. In this way D3s are small groups of 3 people who have committed to encouraging one another in their apprenticeship to Jesus, and become stronger together in their faith.

DISCIPLESHIP PRACTICES

There are three key points we see as vital for you to grow in as a D3.

1) Praying for one another

2) Getting into the Bible

3) Developing trust with one another

Our hope is that as you start to practice the first two points in your D3 group you will also start to develop trust in the group.

As trust grows we hope that these groups will give you the opportunity to share your joys and sorrows and to celebrate your growth in Jesus.

COMMITMENT LEVEL

We recommend you meet together once a fortnight for an 1hr and take 5mins a day to encourage one another in their devotional time. However, D3’s are designed to be flexible and adapt to your groups availability. We really want this to be manageable for your group, and suggest that you pick ONE practice from the list below to do daily, and not to think you need to do everything!

HOW TO START

Form a WhatsApp group together and organise a date to meet up. On your first meeting chat about your expectations as a group, and the type of area you want to grow in. Spend some time choosing a resource which will best fits the needs of your group.

Pastor Jonny has written a short devotional for groups to use that are just starting too. Ask at Renew to pick one up.

WRITING YOUR OWN DEVOTIONAL

SOAP is an acronym and is a helpful tool to apply what the Bible says into your life.

S – Scripture: Choose a reading plan and read a portion of the Bible. Pick one verse

O – Observation: Observe what the verse means within it’s context.

A – Application: Write down in your whatsapp group how the verse applies into your life.

P – Pray: Pray for one another that you would be able to put into practive what you have learnt.

If you want to learn more about this we recommend reading Divine Mentor by Wayne Cordero who explains in more detail the idea of SOAP.

PRAYER RESOURCES

A key practice of the disciples in the early church is meeting up and praying for one another.

They all joined together constantly in prayer… (Acts 1:14a)

You could download and use the following apps.

The Youversion Bible app has a daily prayer exercise you can work through on its front page (5mins a day).

Also the Lectio365 app is a brilliant daily prayer app which takes around (10mins a day).
